Gibbons (1648-1720) was born in Rotterdam to English parents and ‘discovered’ by John Evelyn in 1671. He introduced him to Charles the Second and Christopher Wren.
Wren used him in his rebuilding of London after the Fire, most famously in the choir stalls at St Paul’s. Appointed Master Carver under five monarchs, Gibbons’ work appears in the various Royal Palaces in London.
Gibbons was a master at carving foliage, decorative garlands - and chains of flowers and fruit in high relief. He is recognised as one of the greatest of all European carvers and sculptors.
His work in Oxford includes the library in Queen’s College; and the exquisite decorations - in lime and pearwood - adorning the screen and altarpiece in the chapel of Trinity College.

Pros of bamboo flooring
There is abundant publicity about hardwood flooring and its many health and
maintenance benefits, yet the option to use bamboo to create a durable and attractive
feature in your home is sometimes overlooked. However, bamboo has become
increasingly popular in recent years, not least as it tends to be more affordable than
other types of wood floor.
While bamboo is often associated with pandas or furniture, the type of bamboo used
to create flooring is extremely strong and hardwearing - and just as full of character
as such materials such as as oak and pine.
Bamboo is cheap to produce - while trees, such as oak, take hundreds of years to fully form, the type bamboo used to create attractive flooring takes just five to six years to fully mature.
It's incredibly hardwearing, most manufacturers offer 25 years guaranteed on the wood.. The craftsmanship that goes into creating floor planks from bamboo strands uses heat, high pressure and adhesives.
Bamboo is also a versatile flooring material, as the density can be varied according to the fineness of the strands and the pressure applied when crafting floor planks. Some variations have a wood structure beneath the bamboo strands.
There are a lot more colour options, too, when you fit bamboo flooring - dyes can be added to the production process. Sometimes the boards are finished off by scraping them, to give them an aged look.
Most bamboo is laid as a floating floor, but it can be fitted incorporating nails and glue too.
Sanding bamboo floors
Sanding bamboo flooring - either to remove old stains, repair damage such as scratches, or simply to restore it after years of hard wear – is best left to the professionals.
This is because sanding, sealing and varnishing a floor made of bamboo has to be done with great care.
You need to ensure the integrity of the boards is not compromised by disrupting the bamboo strands.
Also, the adhesives used in its construction could create a toxic effect if the sanding is not done carefully.
If you move into a property with bamboo flooring, don’t automatically assume you need to rip out because
it’s worn, scratched or not finished to your preferences.
Give The Floor Sanding Mates a call and we can apply our specialist knowledge, refinishing your bamboo
floor to a high standard.
